NEW DELHI: There is finally some good news for Millennium City. The intra-city commute just got easier. Five months before the Delhi Metro provides  the satellite township a fast link to the heart of the Capital, Gurgaon’s Qutab Minar-Sushant Lok stretch will be in use. It is scheduled to open in January 2010.

The Haryana government requested Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to open the Gurgaon stretch before the rest of the line because the township lacks proper public transport.

Construction of the Gurgaon portion of the line, spanning 7.3 km, is progressing fast. Gurgaon residents are elated. ‘‘Getting anywhere within Gurgaon is a headache if one doesn’t own a car. We have been eagerly waiting for the opening of this line and even if it doesn’t connect with Delhi immediately, it’s fine,’’ said Maneesha Solanki, who lives at Garden Estate.

A DMRC spokesperson said, ‘‘The station buildings are ready and only painting the exteriors and construction of the entry/exit structures are left. Even the elevated line is ready as the parapets and railings have been fixed on the Gurgaon side. We are now speeding up work on the Delhi side of MG Road’’, said a spokesperson. In June 2010, the line will be extended to the Central Secretariat.
